Mr Shaun Goater

Post by Colin_Bell on Thu May 29, 2008 12:50 pm

Shaun Goater was Signed from Bristol City for £400k by Joe Royle at the back-end of March 98. Since signing the Goat had regularly been City's Top Goal scorer.

[X][X]

The Goat consistently denied the critics who said he wouldn't score at the upper levels,The shear amount of goals he has scored has put him amongst the All-time best goal-scorers for City, he has 2 records for goals in a season in the top twenty all time club scorers chart, yet everyone still writes him off - except for City Fans!...

Goater was the First player to reach 30 goals in a season since Francis Lee in 1971.

His nickname Feed the Goat was actually first said by former player (and legend in his own right) Paul Dickov, and it stuck. He is a confidence player, when 'high' he scores for fun and then some.

Goater reached the 100 goal mark scored for City, by scoring 2 in the Manchester Derby on 9th November 2002 in a 3-1 win, even nicer is the knowledge it was Man U who brought him over from Bemuda before selling him to Rotherham.

1997/98 Goater Arrived late in the season, signed by Joe Royle to try and help Keep City in Division 1, Despite scoring 3 goals in 7, City were relegated and City fans were not convinced Goater was the man.

1998/99 The whole Season was a struggle, but Goater was one of the most consistent performers who helped City to promotion back to Division 1 at the 1st time of asking. He started to gain respect of the supporters scoring 21 goals. He was also named in the Div2 select 11.

1999/00 29 goals from the Goat made him a cult figure with the fans, and helped City to Gain Promotion into the Premier League for there second successive promotion in 2 years. Goater Picked up the Fans Player of the Year award and also finished Division 1 top Goalscorer.

2000/01 Wanchope and George Weah arrived, and Goater struggled with a some niggling injurys for the first time in his City Career, Despite the awfull football tactics being employed by Royal and Injury's, Goater still managed to score 12 goals in 25 starts. Unfortunatly City were Relegated back into Division 1

2001/02 Joe Royal was replaced by Kevin Keegan, Despite a Shaky start, City ended by far the best team in the league and waltzed away with the Championship, Goater helping City to score 108 goals in the season with a haul of 32 goals. He was Named in the Div1 select 11 and finished as Div1 Top Goal Scorer.

2002/03 The Arrival of Anelka, then Fowler, Hindered Goaters chances in the first team and subsequently led to the Goat having to leave a club he loves as much as the fans love him... but When called on, we fed the Goat and he Duly replied.
He Enjoyed the Derby matches scoring 2 in a 3-1 victory at Maine Road, stealing the ball from Gary Neville on the Utd touchline to slot it in the net will be remembered for many years to come.

He also scored in the away game at Old trafford coming on as Sub in the last 5 mins, within 9 seconds, Equalised with his 1st touch - the fastest Premiership goal ever after coming on as sub! Benarbia who had also just come on, chipped a freekick towards Shaun Wright (another sub!) who chipped it up for Goater to thump it in with his head!

The Goat had the ball in the back of the net again, but it was ruled out for handball by Anelka.
Goater captained an emotional last game of the season... not only was the game saying goodbye to the Historys of Maine Road. We were saying goodbye to someone who will be forever in City Supporters hearts.

2003/04 Goater left to Join Reading in a £500k transfer, he returned to wave fairwell for one last time before the Barcelona match to rapturous applause. Goater went on to Score in his 3rd game and then carried on scoring.....

Thanks for the memories Shaun
